Public Footpaths & Walks

There are several public footpaths situated across and around the estate for you to access and enjoy, from Egloskerry to the River Ottery…and beyond! Spring and summer are especially rewarding with the seasonal visual feast of meadow flowers and blossoming hedgerows, in addition to the bucolic beauty and historical architecture which is visible all year round.

As the public footpath routes span across working farms, we ask you kindly follow the below ground rules to ensure your enjoyment, safety and the welfare of livestock.

  • Keep to the signposted routes
  • Ensure dogs are kept on leads at all times
  • Remember to close gates if you open them
  • Please report potentially dangerous situations to us (e.g. broken overhanging branches or path obstructions) via the Contact page

Remember, you can view all routes and track your progress in real-time, using the OS Maps or Google Maps on your smartphone.

Play Area

What now stands as the Egloskerry village “play area” once played host to Penheale wheat, oats and barley crops. As we wanted to create an area of recreation for the enjoyment of all, this centrally-located parcel of land (behind the Old Post Office) was the obvious choice.

Much has changed since the transformation from field to fully-equipped play area. Operated in partnership with custodians, Egloskerry Parish Council, it has evolved into central meeting place for family gatherings, play and events, including the annual village fete and pet blessings. Everyone is welcome!

For the health, safety and wellbeing of all visitors, we request you:

  • Ensure dogs are kept on leads at all times
  • Clean up after your dog (maximum penalty £1000)

Volunteering & Community

We are always delighted to hear from those interested in volunteering. It takes quite a team and oodles of dedication to ensure Penheale continually thrives!

Whether it is in garden, the surrounding parkland or on the wider Estate, volunteering will give you a valuable opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and become part of something special in an iconic, historically important setting.

Please contact us (here) to express your interest or sign-up to our newsletter to receive further information about current and future the opportunities.

A place shaped by nature

Penheale’s relationship with local community has evolved throughout its centuries-old history. Previous incumbents were major local employers, Vicar to Egloskerry Church and rallied pro-Royalist trips against Cromwell! Today, we maintain tradition but with participation in local affairs, events and fundraisers.
